Not doing or delaying of an action which is very often directly associated to perfectionism. A consequence of procrastination is that it often makes us feel higher levels of stress and guilt. Procrastinators produce less than their counterparts and have the ability to create a calamity out of thin air. Many times they can get annoyed with friends as they can't accomplish their commitments as agreed. It is not abnormal for an individual to procrastinate sometimes but it may be something to be concerned about if it starts to affect their normal every day functions in life. People who suffer from serious procrastination may actually be suffering from an underlying psychological or physiological disorder as well.
The word procrastination comes from the Latin {words of|] "Pro" which means forward and the word "Crastinus" which means of tomorrow. Many people through history have made quotes capturing the nature procrastination, for example...There are a million ways to lose a work day, but not even a single way to get one back.
The are various causes with the psychological type of procrastination but in general the person with the condition to experience the following:-
1. Anxious 2. Will have a low sense of their own self worth 3. A can't do it mentality
Often a procrastinator will have an exaggerated degree of conscientiousness based on their inclination to be perfect or seen as an achiever. This is in direct conflict to their realistic appreciation of what their obligations and potential actually are. This may mean the person may tend to over or underestimate the size of the task they have undertaken.
Research in relation to the physiological aspects of procrastination. Focussing in relation to the role of the prefrontal cortex of the human brain. It is here that researchers believe the brain is responsible for the executive functions such as planning, impulse control, and attention and,it also behaves like a filter by reducing the amount of stimuli which distracts other regions of the brain. Should there be damage or low activation in this part of the brain then it it is likely to reduce a person's ability to filter out such stimuli that is proven to distract them. the effect of this is that they are likely to be poorly organized, they will be less and their tendency procrastination will be increased.
It is then that duty that was once not urgent higher up the list of things to complete and will soon become a priority. As a result the procrastinator will find that all his tasks are now urgent and because he is unable to establish any prior ties in order to get complete any task. When in this situation such people are often to be found attending to tasks that are neither urgent nor a priority in order to get away from the stresses of the others.
The procrastinator needs to understand that only by organizing their priorities and planning every day the day before. It is imperative that they dedicate time sometime during each day to create their plan of action {of|for|covering) the tasks that they {need|have) to complete the next day. If they can then divide these tasks up into little chunks in order to get the job done. Finishing a task can help relieve the effects of procrastination that they are feeling, once a procrastinator completes a difficult task it can help unleash their abilities, the biggest problem is getting them to that point.
